What’s new for sprayable light stable thick film coatings?
Light stable thick film coatings have seen a surge in market acceptance since 2003. Along with the traditional markets of corrosion protection and secondary containment, automotive OEMs are now using light stable sprayable thick film coatings as a truck bed liner. This new application has spurred new interest to expand this technology into other areas where weatherability has previously been achieved by over-coating an aromatic thick film coating with a thin weatherable protective coating. This old approach adds significantly to the labor cost of installing a protective coating.
One way to avoid this added labor cost is to use one layer that can do both - be weatherable and resilient. Most recently, light stable spray elastomers were developed using polyisocyanates that are currently used in high performance polyurethane coatings. The low viscosity products available from Bayer MaterialScience, Desmodur® N 3400, XP 2580, and XP 2410 work well in these formulations. Excellent physical properties can be achieved when these products are combined with light stable co-reactants. One unique aspect of these products is that you can use one co-reactant package and by varying the polyisocyanate choice you can produce a flexible or a rigid coating.
